Dr Martin Samuels is a Consultant Respiratory Paediatrician working at Staffordshire Children’s Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent, and Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London, UK. He has long-standing interests in respiratory control disorders, including sleep-disordered breathing, hyper- and hypo- ventilation, and apnoea, and looks after a large cohort of patients needing long term ventilation, including those with backgrounds of neuromuscular disorders, neurodisability and central hypoventilation syndromes.
He trained at the National Heart and Lung Institute in London, where his MD thesis was on mechanisms for hypoxaemic episodes in infants and children, including OSA, Down’s syndrome, sickle cell disease, severe cyanotic breath-holding, and infants subject to suffocation from child abuse. For over 30 years, he has looked after a substantial number of children with Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome and has contributed to international guidelines on this disorder.
Current research interests include diagnostic techniques for obstructive sleep apnoea and hypoxic challenge testing in hypoventilation disorders.
